What do you give the 20th century caveman who has everything? A swanky new cave of course: a place where he can talk about the wheel and fire and the fine art of hunting (or whatever personal discovery beckons on the horizon). This was some cave; a retreat and studio space designed without a mammoth footprint – just 15m2 – but housing office space, a double sofa bed, bookcases and additional seating for passing hunter-gatherers. And of course, the modern caveman is walking fully upright these days, so we gave him a vaulted ceiling too. Reclaimed primeval birthrights. Reclaimed materials. Modern elegance.

Highlights:

  • All reclaimed wood throughout.

  • High-performance Icynene® insulation for walls and ceiling.

  • Foam insulation under concrete floor.

  • All new wood double-glazed windows, argon filled for high thermal performance.

  • High airtight properties and warmth retention.

  • Reclaimed cedar shingles for roofing.

  • Convect Air high-efficiency radiator.

“I had longed for a garden studio and retreat space and it was amazing to achieve this goal on a relatively small budget with all natural materials and a space designed to sing. It became my home not far away from home; a sublime enhancement to my quality of life…and my partner’s.”
